How to improve employee performance?
Training isn't always the solution for improved performance.

Ask yourself...

1. Do I want my employees to know more about a specific product, technology or procedure?

2. Do I want my employees to change a certain behavior that I feel is getting in the way of their job performance?

If you are seeking behavior change for another person, following are four important factors that facilitate long-term behavior change.

1. Clear Outcomes: People need to have a vision, direction, or goal to achieve in order to make behavior changes.

2. Motivation: People only work toward new outcomes if they have a personal outcome they are seeking. Your job as a manager or supervisor is to identify what motivates your employee.

3. Support: People need the perspective of another person to help them identify their current strengths as well as areas for improvement. People benefit from having a person who believes in their own ability to reach a desired outcome or goal.

4. Time: Behavior change takes time. People need time and support to practice new skills and thinking on the job. Don??t expect immediate long-term change the day after you??ve supported a new behavior. Continue to support and share feedback.

Getting the most for educational investments
In order to get the most from your educational investments the manager should be comfortable with these four factors.

Depending on the manager??s preferred style of communicating, providing these four factors may require behavior change first on the part of the manager or supervisor.
