Choosing a Camera

What I will be doing with the camera most often.

I usually take exactly the same kind of pictures all the time.

My range of pictures vary between taking photos of the kids, holidays and family events. But I have not got the time or patience to learn a lot of technical mumbo jumbo.

My pictures are of a very wide range of things. I need something that will provide high quality results but the size of the camera must be kept to a minimum.

I photograph a wide variety of different things. Size and weight are not an issue. I would also like to learn and experiment with my photography to stretch some creative muscle.

The range of cameras to consider first

A simple single focal length point and shoot camera would be best suited for what you're looking to do. The only consideration might be the angle of the lens. Most are between 34mm and 38mm, but if you intend taking pictures indoors, a 28 mm lens will do much better.

A compact zoom camera will give you the flexibility and ease of use that you're looking for. The only question might be the size of the zoom you want. Standard ranges are 35-70, 35-90 or 35- 105. There is also 28-50 which is quite useful for indoor shots and closer outdoor shots.

A hybrid type SLR will give you with the flexibility of a true SLR with the advantage of compact one piece design. Some also offer you the manual overrides of the SLR so creativity can be exercised.

A true SLR camera is what you should consider looking at. Things to ask about are whether you want manual or auto focus. Will you want completely manual functions with automated overrides. A completely manual SLR is usually recommended for students of photography so that they can learn what the camera is doing instead of just letting it happen. The rest of us can enjoy the sophistication of of todays true electronic marvels.
