Ask the Optician

Dear Dana,
Q: As a senior I am concerned about my safety. Can you give me some advice about? keeping eyes healthy and some tips on safety and vision?

A: Everybody has different vision needs, but we should all follow some basic tips to ensure our safety! Start with a thorough eye exam once a year to screen for disease and check for an accurate prescription. If? you have been diagnosed with glaucoma, cataracts or macular degeneration and have suffered vision loss, you should consult your optician for information about products that can improve your quality of life and independence.

Proper sunglasses help keep your eyes healthy. Most importantly they preserve the delicate tissues of the eye from harmful UV rays. Good quality sunglasses will also enhance your vision by blocking out daytime glare, reducing blue light in the atmosphere to provide better color perception and generally block light to sensitive eyes.

It is important to see well especially when driving or walking at night. In most cases an anti glare coating will reduce glare and improve night vision. It is easier to see oncoming traffic pedestrians and signs of? trouble with reduced glare especially in farsighted prescriptions.

A proper magnifier will help you read your mail. Many people try to send out fraudulent bills. Read your mail carefully and use a magnifier to verify billing amounts and the name of the company on the bill. A magnifier will help you keep track of your own mail and bills. A signature guide ( a ruler device) helps an unsteady hand sign checks. It is important to keep magnifiers or reading glasses handy in many locations around your home. This will save you multiple trips around the premises if you switch rooms to change activities you won't have to constantly remember your glasses.

If you depend on your glasses make sure they are in good repair. It is important to visit your Optician about 4 times a year for regular cleaning and maintenance. When you clean your glasses daily check if any of the screws are loose. This will avoid any unpleasant mishaps. Keep a spare pair of glasses with a current prescription in case you lose or accidentally break your regular glasses.

Contact lens wearers should make sure they use protein tablets in the cleaning solution to maintain the clarity of the lenses and maintain the best vision possible. If you are unable to regularly clean your own contact lenses you should visit a contact lens fitter who can provide this service for a nominal fee.

Most vision conditions have a good chance of being corrected or assisted. Don't compromise your safety and independence! Wear proper eye wear and sun wear!
