Am I Successful?

  Am I successful?

You are the only one who can answer that.

Success can only be defined by you. When it comes to business to be successful, you must keep score. Our bank does. When the bank has tallied up the half time score they will determine if we continue the game. The bank?s job is to keep an eye your bottom line to ensure their bottom line.

?

"I?m too busy to run around measuring results". There are few things in business that can have such a profound impact on your company?s performance as knowing where you stand at any given time. Would you leave your map and watch behind on a cross Canada family vacation? Periodic "checking in" ensures you will reach your destination within the time you expected. Only through measuring your progress can you be alerted to potential difficulties or opportunities and make the necessary adjustments.

?

If goals are the measurement of your success, then tracking and keeping score of your achievements is the measurement stick.

"If you can?t measure it, you can?t manage it" George Odiorne .

Here are some principles to keep in mind when trac

Tracking must be relevant and simple.

There must be standards/benchmarks by which you can judge your progress and that of others working in your business.

Celebrate accomplishments. Keeping score can be fun.

What should you track? You can determine that by identifying what your high pay off activities are. What activities do you need to do on a regular basis to ensure the success of your business? Measurements can also alert us if we are off track. You won?t know there is problem and you won?t know where the problem is unless you are tracking.

?

Keeping a scoreboard can be fun because apart from telling you there is a problem it also reflects your achievements. Most people enjoy and appreciate seeing their progress and it can inspire friendly competition. Communicating your business?s progress can be motivating for employees because they can relate their everyday activities to the company?s bottom line. Celebrating accomplishments is particularly important to owner/operators who work on their own. Working in isolation you want to find ways to reward your hard work and let others know what you have accomplished.

?

In business keeping score and tracking our progress keeps us in the game and winning. If only success in life could be so easily measured.
